Ben East is 16 years old and has been a member of Team Kennet for nearly 10 years.
On Saturday 15th August, he took part in his first javelin competition this season due to Coronavirus (although he took part in the English Schools virtual competition on 11th July which he won with a throw of 68.00m representing his school, Park House, Newbury, as an Intermediate Boy).
The event on the 15th took place at Lee Valley in North London under strict Covid guidelines. Ben could only be accompanied by his coach, Luke Angell, who has worked with Ben over the past 5 years at Team Kennet. Ben threw and amazing 73.04m on his first attempt, followed by another throw over 72m.
This not only won the competition, but places Ben 5th in the current U18 world rankings and number 1 in the U17 UK rankings, as well as setting a new club record.
Ben said it was good to be throwing again in these difficult times. Hopefully, he can compete again before the season finishes in October when he will move up an age group to the U20s.
I have recently been lucky enough to receive a Sporting Scholarship from Herongate Club allowing me full access to their wide range of facilities and mentoring I can utilise to improve my training. A massive thanks to their team for taking me on and giving me this opportunity.
I have been training regularly at their gym as can be seen in my image gallery, and I have been thoroughly enjoying this! A particular thanks to Connor for all is help in setting this up and I’m excited about what the future holds.
If you want to find out more about Herongate Club, have a look at their Instagram @herongateclub or check out their website – linked to their logo at the bottom of the homepage. Again, a massive thank you for the support – I’ll be back soon!
